A perfect example of people coming together to join our movement here at Aloha United Way. After a culmination of several agencies donating and transporting goods, today we had over 55 volunteers come together to pack close to 60,000 flatware and cutlery items which equated to about 2,000 kits in support of our homeless community.
Partner agencies IHS and Helping Hands Hawaii helped us with pickups at United Airlines of 21 pallets of products including flatware, glassware, linens and cutlery.
We also needed support of hand trucks to help move the items from the flatbed truck and UPS came to the rescue and brought over 10 hand trucks for our usage yesterday along with a volunteer to help guide us through everything.
Internally, we had staff who helped unload the items for our Volunteer packing day. We also picked up 2,100 donated recycled bags from Walmart that we will be using to pack the United Airlines items that were delivered. All the Walmart stores on Oahu generously donated bags so that we could have enough for our packing day.
The Star Advertiser had also donated unused newspapers for us to safely wrap the items in and Hilton Hotels donated over 400 small trash cans for distribution to households.
For packing day, we hit our goal of at least 50 volunteers to come together and assemble the final product of flatware and cutlery kits for homeless.
Overall it was a great morning and afternoon to be had with like-minded people coming together to make a difference in our community and to provide those in need items to better their lives. Now this is definitely a movement in action!
